The exact salary Gen Z expects to make right out of college will shock you

The exact salary Gen Z expects to make right out of college will shock youThe exact salary Gen Z expects to make right out of college will shock youYoure not going to be making that much. And no, youre not going to be making that much, either. The current crop of college grads Generation Z class wildly overestimates the salary theyll be making in their first entry-level jobs, according to a survey from real estate data company Clever. While the average Gen Z undergrad expects to make $57,964 one year out of college, the national zentralwert salary for recent grads with bachelors degrees who have between zero to five years of work experience is actually $47,000. Reality bitesFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreHeres a partial look at expectations vs. reality across majors. The average undergraduate is also unrealistic about the salary theyll be making mid-career (about ten years in), overestimating by about $15,000.Women expect lessWomen generally expect lower salaries than men, even when they hold the same major. On average, women with a bachelors or graduate degree estimate $4,338 less than men with similar degrees early in their career, and $10,836 less than their male counterparts by mid-career.You can see the discrepancy below. But what about bennies?Generation Z, who said that the number one reason theyre going to college is to make more money in my future, is all about the cold, hard cash. They ranked employee benefits differently than Millennials, going for money-based incentives first things like competitive salaries and good insurance plans. They arent as lured by soft benefits like flex time, fun work environments, and unlimited paid time off.But is college worth it?According to a 2015 Gallup poll, only 37% of undergrads believe that college is worth the cost, compared to 50% of college graduates.Perhaps because 81% of respondents with student debt s uggested theyd have to put off major life decisions because of it, such as buying a house or having kids.Cheer up about that $47k salary, Gen Z. Its a lot more than ur starting salary for our first job, which we had to travel to uphill, both ways, in the snow.

President Obamas Task Force on 21st Century Policing

President Obamas Task Force on 21st Century PolicingPresident Obamas Task Force on 21st Century PolicingThe year 2014 was something of a tumultuous one for police officers in the United States. Several high-profile incidents involving the deaths of unarmed men following police uses of force sparked protests and riots across the country. In response to the increasing sentiment of distrust against lawenforcement,PresidentBarack Obama was compelled to convene a Task Force on 21st Century Policing. The Presidents Task Force on 21st Century Policing President Obama signed an executive bestellung to form the task force on December 18, 2014. The task force was made up of representatives from law enforcement chiefs, police unions, police training officers, community leaders, youth activists, and university professors. The TaskForces Purpose The task force held seven listening sessions in cities across the United States. During the sessions, they heard from members of the communities to learn how to work towards greater reductions in crime, while at the same time restoring trust in law enforcement. The task force was asked to provide a report within 90 days of forming. The group issued itsfinalreport in May of 2015, just two months shy of the 50thanniversaryof President Lyndon Johnsons own Presidents Commissionon Law Enforcement andAdministrationofJustice. President Obamas task force produced specific action items in 6 topic areas that the group called pillars, as well as two broad recommendations that called for the establishment of a permanent National Crime and Justice Task Force and support for crime prevention programs that incorporate addressing poverty, education and health, and safety issues in communities. Six Pillars for Building Trust in the Community The Presidents task force provided six pillars, not unlike the Johnson Commissions seven objectives. These pillars recommended important changes to how police interact with their communities First Pi llar Build Trust and LegitimacyThe task force recommended that police officers adopt the guardian concept of policing, in contrast with the idea of the officer as a warrior. They emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency in police actionsand engaging in activities other than enforcement that can promote a positive image of law enforcement.Second Pillar Policy and Oversight? The task force suggested that police departments ensure that their policies reflect the values of their communities and that specific policy address issues like the use of force, public demonstrations, and de-escalation. They also recommended peer reviews of critical incidents and external, independent investigators assigned to questionable uses of force and in-custody deaths. Third Pillar Technology and Social MediaTechnology offers tremendous potential for police departments to better interact with their communities, increase transparency and accountability, and improve safety and security for civilians and officers alike. The task force strongly suggests maximizing the use of technology to improve how police do their jobs on a day-to-day basis.Fourth Pillar Community Policing and Crime ReductionPolicing a community requires involvement and engagement with the community. The task force recommended that police departments recommit to community-oriented policing strategies to improve community relations and take a mora holistic approach to address crime. Fifth Pillar Training and Education? The task force encouraged the federal government to foster partnerships with training centers across the country and facilitate more consistent training and standards. They also recommended forming training hubs to encourage innovation, community engagement in training and a national postgraduate institute of policing.Sixth Pillar Officer Wellness and Safety?Police work is inherently dangerous and can even be potentially hazardous to officers health. The task force recommended implementi ng scientifically supported shift lengths and building on research into officer-related deaths and critical injuries. Just as circumstances demanded a change in policing tactics in President Johnsons day, the environment in 2014 required a new way to address how law enforcement approached their communities. In time, through the recommendations of the task force and other law enforcement and community leaders, police may be able to return to their original principles.

On The Road Today

On The Road Today No blog from me today. Im traveling to Phoenix to MC an event with our partner American Express. If you want to come to future live and virtual PowerToFly events then sign up on the platform and follow whats coming next here. Heres a screen grab of the invite for tonights event. Meet American Express VP of Tech At An Evening For Women Developers One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When welches the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus singl e-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 m illion managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line wor kers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
